Setup

  1. Deck- Use a standard 52-card deck. Remove any Jokers.
  2. Deal- Each player is dealt 10 cards. The dealer deals one card at a time to each player, alternating between them, until both have 10 cards. The remaining cards are placed face down in a stack to form the stockpile. The top card of the stockpile is placed face up next to it to start the discard pile.

Game Play

  1. Objective- Players aim to form sets and run in their hands to “go gin” or have fewer deadwood points than the opponent when the game ends.
  2. Taking Turns-
    • The non-dealer starts the game by either picking up the face-up card from the discard pile or drawing the top card from the stockpile.
    • After drawing a card, the player must discard one card from their hand face up to the discard pile. The turn then passes to the other player.
  3. Knocking-
    • A player can “knock” if their deadwood cards total 10 points or fewer at the end of their turn. To knock, the player discards a card face down and reveals their hand.
    • The opponent then reveals their hand and lays off any of their unmatched cards onto the knocker’s sets or runs if they fit.
  4. Scoring-
    • The knocker scores the difference between the deadwood points in their hand and the opponent’s deadwood points.
    • If a player goes “gin” (has no deadwood), they score 25 bonus points plus the opponent’s deadwood points.
  5. Ending the Game-
    • The game ends when a player reaches 100 points or another agreed-upon score.
