Setup

  1. Deck- Liverpool Rummy is usually played with two standard 52-card decks, including four Jokers, for a total of 108 cards.
  2. Players- The game is best suited for 3 to 8 players.
  3. Dealing- The dealer shuffles the deck and deals 10 cards to each player. The remaining cards are placed face down in the center of the table to form the draw pile, and the top card of the draw pile is turned face up to start the discard pile.

Objective

The objective of Liverpool Rummy is to be the first player to complete the required melds for each round and have the lowest total score by the end of the game. A meld can be a set (three or more cards of the same rank) or a run (four or more consecutive cards of the same suit).

Gameplay

  1. Round Structure-
    • Liverpool Rummy consists of seven rounds, each with specific requirements for the sets and runs that players must complete to go out. The requirements become progressively more difficult in each round.
    • Example of Round Requirements:
      • Round 1- Two sets of three
      • Round 2- One set of three and one run of four
      • Round 3- Two runs of four
      • Round 4- Three sets of three
      • Round 5- Two sets of three and one run of four
      • Round 6- One set of three and two runs of four
      • Round 7- Three runs of four
  2. Taking Turns-
    • Players take turns in a clockwise direction, starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
    • On a player’s turn, they must draw one card from either the draw pile or the discard pile.
  3. Forming Melds-
    • Players aim to form sets and runs that meet the round’s specific requirements. Players can lay down their melds once they have completed all required sets and runs for the round.
    • Set Example- Three 7s (7 of Hearts, 7 of Diamonds, 7 of Clubs)
    • Run Example- 8, 9, 10 of Spades
  4. Laying Down Melds-
    • When a player has completed the required melds for the current round, they can lay down their cards face-up on the table during their turn. Players can also add cards to their own or other players’ melds in subsequent turns.
  5. Discarding a Card-
    • After drawing a card and optionally laying down melds, the player must discard one card face-up onto the discard pile to end their turn.
  6. Ending a Round-
    • The round ends when a player goes out by laying down all their cards, including a final discard. Other players then reveal their hands and tally up their points based on the cards remaining.
  7. Scoring-
    • Points are scored based on the cards left in each player’s hand when a round ends. Jokers and face cards (King, Queen, Jack) are typically worth 10 points each, Aces are worth 15 points, and all other cards are worth their face value.
    • The player with the lowest total score at the end of all seven rounds wins the game.
