Setup

  1. Deck- Use a standard 52-card deck. Depending on the number of players, multiple decks may be used.
  2. Players- Michigan Rummy is best played with 3 to 8 players.
  3. Chips- Players should have an equal amount of chips or tokens to use for betting and placing on the board.
  4. Board- The game is typically played with a special Michigan Rummy board or a makeshift board with designated areas for each payout (e.g., “King of Hearts,” “10 of Hearts,” “Jack of Diamonds,” “Queen of Spades,” etc.)

Objective

The goal of Michigan Rummy is to be the first player to play all your cards by forming sets and sequences, while also winning chips from the board through successful card play.

Game Play

1. Dealing the Cards

  • The dealer shuffles the deck and deals the entire deck evenly to all players. Some players may receive an extra card if the deck doesn’t divide evenly. These extra cards can be set aside or left in the deck.

2. Placing Chips

  • Before the game starts, each player places a chip in each section of the board or layout (for payouts such as “King of Hearts,” “Queen of Spades,” etc.).

3. Playing the Game

  • Phase 1- Poker Phase
    • Each player looks at their hand and selects their best five-card Poker hand. A round of betting ensues, similar to Poker, where players can bet, raise, or fold.
    • The player with the best Poker hand wins the pot.
  • Phase 2- Michigan Rummy Phase
    • Starting with the player to the dealer’s left, players take turns playing cards to the table.
    • Players must play in ascending order, starting with the lowest card of a suit. The first card played should be the lowest card any player has in any suit.
    • Players continue playing cards in sequence until no more cards can be played (i.e., the next card in sequence is missing).
    • If a player cannot play a card, the turn passes to the next player.

4. Collecting Chips

  • Certain cards, when played, allow the player to collect chips from the board. For example, if a player plays the “King of Hearts,” they may collect all the chips from the “King of Hearts” space on the board.
  • Other special cards, like the “Queen of Spades” or the “10 of Hearts,” also allow players to collect chips if those cards have been designated for payout.

5. Winning the Game

  • The first player to play all their cards wins the round and collects any remaining chips on the board.
  • The game can be played for a set number of rounds, or until one player has collected all the chips.

Scoring

  • Players count their chips at the end of the game or after the agreed number of rounds. The player with he most chips is declared the winner.
